Adapters - N Series
Type N RF Adapters – The Type N connector is a rugged, threaded RF coaxial connector widely used for antennas, feedlines, commercial communications equipment, amateur radio, cellular systems, RF test equipment, and microwave applications. The standard Type N interface uses a 5/8"-24 UNEF thread and provides a secure connection well suited to both indoor and outdoor RF installations.
Type N connectors are most commonly 50 Ohms, although 75 Ohm versions also exist. Frequency capability depends on the particular connector and manufacturer specifications. Type N connectors are commonly used well into the microwave range, with higher-performance and precision versions capable of operation to 18 GHz and beyond.
This section contains RF adapters that have a Type N connector on one side and another RF connector type, gender, or configuration on the other. Type N adapters allow equipment, antennas, coaxial cables, test instruments, and other RF components using different connector interfaces to be interconnected without replacing the existing connector or cable.
When selecting a Type N adapter, identify the connector type and gender required on both sides. Also consider impedance, operating frequency, RF power, and the environment in which the adapter will be used.
Be aware that not every connector that resembles a standard Type N is necessarily interchangeable. Type N connectors can be encountered in 50 Ohm, 75 Ohm, reverse-polarity (RP), left-hand-thread, and precision-interface versions. Verify the actual interface before attempting to mate unfamiliar connectors. Forcing incompatible interfaces together can damage the center contacts or other mating surfaces.
As with any RF adapter, the adapter adds another electrical and mechanical interface to the transmission line. At lower frequencies this may have little practical effect, but as frequency increases, adapter quality, impedance consistency, VSWR, and insertion loss become increasingly important. At higher RF power levels, the adapter's construction and power capability should also be considered.
