Type N Connectors – The Type N connector is a threaded RF coaxial connector widely used in commercial, amateur radio, cellular, antenna, test equipment, and other RF applications. Its relatively rugged construction, good weather resistance when properly mated, and excellent RF performance make it especially useful for outdoor antenna and higher-power applications.
A standard Type N connector uses a 5/8"-24 UNEF thread. Type N connectors are most commonly 50 Ohms, although 75 Ohm versions also exist. The 50 and 75 Ohm versions have differences in their internal interface and should not be intermixed. Always verify the impedance and interface when working with unfamiliar Type N connectors.
Frequency capability depends on the design and manufacturer. Type N connectors are commonly used well into the microwave range, and higher-performance or precision versions can be specified to 18 GHz and beyond. The maximum usable frequency of a particular connector should therefore be determined from the manufacturer's specifications rather than from the Type N interface name alone.
RF power ratings also require some explanation. Peak power and average power are different limitations. Maximum peak power is generally limited by voltage breakdown across the dielectric or air spaces within the connector, particularly around the center-contact region. Maximum average power is generally limited by heating and power dissipation within the connector and therefore varies with frequency, connector construction, cable, installation, and operating conditions. A connector that can withstand a high peak RF power level does not necessarily have the same capability for continuous average RF power.
In addition to the conventional Type N interface, Type N connectors may be encountered in reverse-polarity (RP), left-hand-thread, 75 Ohm, and precision-interface versions. These variations are not necessarily interchangeable with a standard 50 Ohm Type N connector even though they may appear similar. Precision Type N interfaces are designed for improved dimensional control and more stable, repeatable RF performance, particularly in measurement and laboratory applications.
