The Chinese version of the PL-259 connector typically uses a metric thread, whereas the American version uses 5/8-24 UNEF (Unified Extra Fine) threading.
Chinese PL-259 Thread Details:
-
The most common thread type used on Chinese-manufactured PL-259 connectors is M16x1 (Metric 16 mm diameter, 1 mm pitch).
However, variations do exist, and some lower-cost China imports may not follow strict thread standards, leading to further compatibility issues with American 5/8-24 connectors.
Summary:
Version | Thread Type | Pitch |
---|---|---|
American PL-259 | 5/8"-24 UNEF | 24 TPI |
Chinese PL-259 | Likely M16x1 | 1mm |
If you're dealing with mismatched threads (e.g., trying to mate a Chinese connector to an American socket), you'll likely face fit or stripping issues. For best results, verify the thread spec from the supplier or measure using thread gauges or calipers.
As well, at least one China made mobile antenna mount is using the China thread on their mount and the antenna base. Don't get these confused!
Sadly, you cannot always tell what thread it is by threading it onto a radio or other device. Many CBs, radios and devices are made in China and of course they will often use the cheaper connector which is the common China thread used on China production lines. So it may thread onto your CB radio just fine and not a good UHF connector series with American specs.
